What is Avid
AVID is an acronym that stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.
AVID at Hickman High School is a elective class that uses the familial environment to support students in academic risk taking in AP and honors classes, while teaching strategies to prepare them for the rigor in high school and college.
We teach our students strategies based around the five main categories; Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading. We refer to these categories as WICOR. These strategies are also being taught school wide to ensure all students receive these strategies to improve comprehension and understanding.

Why the AVID Elective works?
Relationships
AVID's main success is build on the relationship and support that is built within the classroom. Our AVID elective students get the opportunity to "loop" with their class. This means many of our students (when starting their Freshmen year) are together all Four years of high school. Students get the chance to grow and truly know one another.
Challenges
Our AVID elective students are asked to take on an academic challenge, while using their classmates and teachers to learn ways of overcoming this challenge.
Many of our students may say this may be the hardest part of the AVID elective expectation. However, this one expectation not only prepares your for the challenges you may experience in the classroom in college, but the challenges in life.
Team Building
Every high school student wants to and has to have fun to feel that something is enjoyable. So, why not incorporate that into learning.
Games & activities have allowed many of our students to let his or her guard's down to get to know one another, learn something about one another, and most importantly, laugh together.
Service Activities
Our students greatly enjoy our service projects throughout the year. They get the opportunity to give back to the community and work together in this effort.
We have done pro racked leaves, and cleaned up gardens, worked the fundraising events at local elementary schools, delivered our Hickman swagger wagon as a reward, and
Outings & College Visits
Our students get the opportunity to learn and bond away from the school. The get to visit colleges and experience something new together.
This time allows them to forget about the current stressors of high school and begin dreaming about their possibilities and the best part they get to share this time together.
Our goal is to visit at least one college/university in Missouri each year.
We also like to take opportunities to have Family Fun nights, attend games together, pancake breakfasts, holiday parties, dinner on the town (typically after service projects).
